Wood Turning, Wood working, Scroll Saw Work

The aim of this course is to give the student a basic introduction to woodworking skills. By the end of the course the student should be confident in the use of a medium wood turning lathe, the correct use of wood carving tools, and confident to operate a scroll saw. The student will aim to complete three projects.

Course hours

6 hours - 09.30 -12.30  (Morning) 13.00 -16.00 (Afternoon)          

Day 1 - Wood Turning        

Introduction to woodturning lathes, tools, and correct use.

Wood Grain, marking up and setting up work on a lathe.

Projects: Small bowl, small vase.

Day 2 - Wood Working

Introduction to wood working, safe use of tools.

Use hand tools to make a toolbox.

Understanding the use of a plan, interpretation of measurements and transferring them onto the timber.

Project: Small tool/utility box.

Day 3 - Scroll Saw Working

Introduction to scroll saw, safe use and procedures.

Transferring patterns onto work piece.

Projects: Jigsaw, names

The next level would involve general wood working where the student would be introduced to the use of hand tools, basic joint construction, and then the modern machinery that is available in the bigger workshops. The finished project would be a set piece of furniture, possibly small coffee table, beside cabinet, stool or chair.
